Featured pictures Featured pictures are images from highly skilled creators that the Wikimedia Commons community has chosen as some of the highest quality on the site. Simply click on the name of a category on this page to see the featured images for that subject. To reuse any images from Wikimedia Commons please see this guide. There are currently 21,457 of such images in the Commons repository which is roughly 0.015% of the available images (139,080,632). All featured images are entered into our annual Picture of the Year competition. You may wish to browse the profiles of individual photographers, illustrators, and restorationists within the Commons community who have contributed a substantial portion of our featured pictures. Images may be considered for featured status by being listed at Commons:Featured picture candidates, where the community will reach a consensus. An image only appears one time in the galleries. Picture of the day Key Monastery in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an elevation of 4,166 m (13,668 ft) on a hill rising above the Spiti valley, where it is the largest monastery and houses hundreds of monks. It is said to have been founded in the 11th century and belongs to the Gelugpa school of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism. This view shows the monastery in winter, overlooking the snow-covered Spiti river valley with the Himalayas in the background. +/− [en]
